Profica to project manage multi-million rand GrandWest expansion

Profica will project manage the R122-million upgrade of the popular Grand Hotel at the GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World in Cape Town. Opened 21 years ago, it has since become the busiest and largest casino and leisure complex in South Africa.

This will be phase one of a five-year master plan that includes a separate 250-room, four-star conference hotel and a shopping centre. The hotel will be expanded from 39 to 107 rooms and facilities including an indoor heated swimming pool, a nail bar and a gym will be added.
The Grand Hotel celebrates South African heritage as it is based on the hotel that was once on the corner of Adderley and Strand streets, built in 1894 and demolished in 1951. It is important to keep the original façade and preserve the look and feel.

To respect the existing architectural style, the design is based on developing two identical three-story wings positioned symmetrically on either side of the existing entrance and porte-cochère, which will remain largely unchanged. The two new wings will connect the existing hotel on the north and south corners, including presidential suites, ordinary suites, double and twin rooms and inter-leading family rooms. There will also be a new road for direct access to the hotel.

A new lift will be added and construction will take place within an active environment. The impact on customers, such as dust, noise, and vibrations, will always be carefully managed. It will be a complex project as the hotel will continue running and disruptions need to be minimised.

The hotel will be handed over in just eleven months, by October 2023. Profica is up to the challenge!
